In August of 2005, two families were sent from our community in Winnipeg, Manitoba to establish a home in Courtenay, Vancouver Island. Courtenay is located in the heart of Comox Valley, a beautiful valley of farmland, meadows and majestic furfir trees. On the West side of the valley layslies the Beaufort Range with its glaciers and tall mountain peaks and on the east side is the straightStrait of Georgia and Discovery Islands. The climate here is mild and temperate and the folks who live in this valley are friendly and hospitable.
Comox in the native language means “plenty, riches and abundance”. It was said in the early days that no native ever wanted for food in the rich valevalley of the Comox. Salmon could be speared in every stream and canoes could be piled high with salmon. There were duck and geese in the brackish waters of the flats and elk to be found in abundance in the swamps. It was indeed a land of plenty.
So here in this `land of plenty', we purchased a small house in the heart of downtown Courtenay. We had the vision to open a small cafe so that people could get to know who we are and sesee the witness of a people working together in oneness of heart.
As this vision is still in the process of being realized, we have purchased a 22 acre farm just 15 Km Northkm north of Courtenay, at the foothill of Mt. Washington. This old farm has been a project in itself where much had to be done to make it a suitable dwelling for us as a people.
At this present time, we currently raise dairy goats, which provide us with fresh goat milk and delicious feta cheese. We also have a dairy cow, which supplies us with milk from which we make various types of cheeses and yogurt. Our free range chickens are laying an abundance of eggs.
We have a vegetable garden that feeds us all year around and our ultimate vision is to be able to also supply our cafe with delicious fresh organic fruits and produce.
We are currently planting an orchard, with blueberry bushes as well as apple, pear and plum trees along sidealongside a walnut grove.
In the same way that our little farm has been a place in need of many repairs, we also were people in need of restoration in our lives. Our community is made of people from all walks of life. We were tradesmen, professionals, teachers and businessmen, but unfulfilled with what the world had to offer. We needed love, peace and forgiveness. Just living on a nice farm with nice people did not give us that. We live together as a result of the forgiveness and peace we found. We found these fundamental values in our Master Yahshua who died for us and rose on our behalf. This is why we can now proclaim with a unified voice that He died for us so we who live no longer live for ourselves but for the One who died and rose again on our behalf. If you find yourself needy as we were, please come and visit us anytime or just drop in for a hot cup of fresh Yerba Mate tea or a glass of fresh goat milk.
“Welcome to our community in Courtenay, where the neediest people live; people who needed love, forgiveness and a home. You can be here and be needy just like the rest of us."
